![]() ![]() The task thereby entails examining the interplay of this myth and social responsibility, particularly between the characters of Odili and Nanga, both in whom are found the types of the alazon. The present study finds in this narrative by Achebe the mythic sequence of the alazon. This medium by which literature, as art, comes into being is bound up in myth. Distinct from other linguistic structures is literary art as it betokens a self-referential and self-sufficing construct wherein representation of art is by language alone. However that is neither what literature is, nor what it is for. Literary art, then, takes its place among other works as a conveyer of morals for corporate responsibility hence many studies of novels, A Man of the People included, have been done with this end in view. In literary criticism, the question of message more often than not seems the focus of character study of especially the narrative, considering that this form of literature-apparently for many critics-is furnished with lifelikeness of human beings, inasmuch as the popular view of the world remains anthropocentric and, ultimately, utilitarian. ![]()
